Norfolk Yorkstone floor & patio

Yorkstone flags

A year after supplying a 40m2 Yorkstone floor for our customer, Scott, he came back to us to order 25m2 flagstones for a patio to continue on from the internal Yorkstone floor.  He recently kindly sent us these images of the almost finished renovation and said:

“Our floor and patio is finally laid and we are both delighted with it. The slabs look really lovely.

I’ve cleaned them since the pictures were taken and the colours look even better now.

Thanks again for all your help, your good service, and your wonderfully wobbly slabs….. Wouldn’t hesitate to use you again or recommend you to anyone else.”

Stone floor living room

Prior to delivery, the floor was coursed to a room plan and the flagstones were calibrated to approximately 45mm thickness. The property was in Norfolk and unfortunately, Scott didn’t get a chance to visit our reclamation yard in Lancashire to view the stone in person, so had to rely on email. Before the stone was dispatched we sent photographs of the floor laid out in our yard to make sure he was happy.  The brief for this floor was to include some multi-coloured flagstones with interesting patterns in a mix of buff and grey.

When supplying the flagstones for the patio, 12 months later,  we carefully picked out the same range of colours to ensure continuity.  The thickness of the flagstones required for outside was not as important so they did not need to be calibrated.

Reclaimed Yorkstone floor & patio in Liverpool

Cathedral grade stone flags

In summer 2017 we supplied approximately 40m2 smooth reclaimed Yorkstone flags to Joanne and Phil who were creating a rustic Italian style dining area, complete with pizza oven and BBQ, in the garden of their Liverpool home.  We were delighted when they allowed us to visit last week to take some photographs of the finished project.

Yorsktone flags were supplied for the internal floor area and the outside patio area which wrapped around two sides of the building.  Prior to delivery the flagstones were coursed to specification in our yard and sent with a plan for laying.  The flagstones were calibrated to an approximate thickness of 40mm to give the required depth plus bedding to allow the flags to run from inside to outside.

Stone Floor laid in Waddington Farmhouse

reclaimed stone floor

Smooth foot worn flagstones were calibrated to a uniform thickness of approximately 35 mm to be used with an underfloor heating system.  The flagstones used for this floor hinted towards buff in colour.  Prior to delivery the flagstones were coursed, in rows of equal widths and random lengths, to a room plan.  This process increased efficiency and reduced cost in laying the stone floor.

The flagstone used for the step (above) was particularly worn and looks as though it could be original to the property, along with the stone floor.

The photo above shows the flags laid in another area of the house, prior to being sealed. We always recommend using a good sealer on the stone, there are various types available including matt sealers that don’t change the appearance of the stone.  We also supplied a number of reclaimed oak beams, including the beam used for a fireplace mantle below:

Reclaimed Yorkstone Floor laid in pub, The Dressers Arms, dating back to the 1700s

We specialise in the supply of  bespoke Reclaimed Yorkstone floors and were excited to be working with a well-loved local pub.  Flagstones were supplied in a mixture of buff and grey colours.  The Yorkstone floor was coursed to plan eliminating the need for wastage.  Course widths started at 12” wide and went up to 36” wide.  Prior to supply each flagstone was calibrated to a uniform thickness of 35mm and specially cleaned for interior use.  Once laid a sealer was applied to protect and enhance the stone.  There are lots of different types of stone sealers available for sale, here ‘Nexus pro-410‘ solvent based colour enhancing sealer was used.

Following the recent sale of the pub to Jack, owner of the adjacent Chinese restaurant ‘Little Hong Kong’, the pub underwent some renovation work.  The bar area was extended and we were asked to supply some extra stone flags.  We often don’t get the chance to see finished floors so it was great to view the stone after a years’ worth of foot traffic and beer swill.  The pub has a great selection of real ales and we highly recommend the famous Dresser’s Steak Pudding!

We also had the opportunity to take some photos of the Reclaimed Oak Beams which we had supplied a year earlier.  The Beams were cleaned and hand finished in beeswax.  Here they are in our yard prior to being delivered

Reclaimed Stone Floor laid in Lancashire Edwardian Terrace

tone Flooring laid in courses

We recently supplied the stone floor in the photographs below.  Each stone floor is unique, no two flagstones are the same and that’s the beauty of it.   All reclaimed flagstones were supplied calibrated to a depth of 35 mm for optimum use with the underfloor heating system.

When we supply an internal bespoke coursed floor none of the reclaimed flags are sandblasted.  Each flag is carefully hand cleaned using techniques we have spent years researching to ensure the flags retain their natural foot worn patina.

Reclaimed Stone Floor laid in a kitchen

Antique Stone Floor laid in a house

Interior Reclaimed Stone Flags laid

If you are planning to lay the stone in a random pattern you will need to order extra (approximately 10% for wastage).  Traditionally stone floors were laid in courses of an equal width with random lengths.   We offer a bespoke coursing service and will lay the floor out in our yard to fit room dimensions.  This saves lots of time and expense on site and means you don’t have to order extra for wastage.  Flagstones are dispatched with a detailed plan for laying on numbered pallets.

Yorkstone flags are extremely durable and will last forever but a good sealer will make the stone less porous and more stain resistant.  Use a colour enhancing or wet look sealer for a more dramatic look.  To protect the stone without changing the appearance use a matte look sealer.   Buy a range of sealers to try on off cuts before committing to the entire floor.

Choosing a Hearth and Mantle using Reclaimed Materials

Log Burner on Reclaimed Stone Hearth

Log burner with oak mantle

(Above) Carron 7.3KW Enamel Multifuel Stove £1025, Hand finished Reclaimed Oak Beam £200, Antique Yorkstone Hearth £160 all from Ribble Reclamation

What type of hearth should I choose for my wood burning stove or fire?

We stock a great choice of natural non-combustible reclaimed materials perfect for hearth stones including: Slate, Terracotta, Granite, Travertine and our favourite….  Reclaimed Yorkstone.  Nothing beats the rustic charm of a unique worn antique flagstone. When fitted properly a Yorkstone hearth will last forever.  Flagstones are graded depending on their surface, provenance & patina from cathedral grade smooth top flagstones to a rustic riven finish.  The natural colour of the stone varies depending on where it was originally quarried from, at the moment we have blue, grey, cherry, dark brown, buff and even purple.  When considering the size of the hearth current UK building regulations (document J) stipulate there should be a clearance of 300mm at the front of the appliance and 150mm at the sides. You can choose whether to use one large flagstone, or a few slabs jointed together. Visit us with your dimensions and we will be happy to discuss a range of options.  Prices start from £70 (ex. VAT) per sq. y and flagstones over 1m long tend to be more expensive.

Stone Hearth

How should I protect my hearth?
If you decide to fit a Stone or Slate hearth we would definitely recommend applying a sealer. Be extra careful burning candles as melted wax will stain and is very difficult to remove. To darken the hearth use a colour enhancing sealer. Invisible/ matt sealers should be used if you want to add protection whilst keeping the appearance the same.  http://www.sealer-seal-sealant.co.uk/ has some good options.  Using a roller to apply sealer helps achieve an even application.

Stone Hearth
What type of mantle should I go for?

When choosing a mantle remember flue pipes get very hot, document j (see above) details required distance between mantle and flue pipe.  Reclaimed Oak is classed as a combustible material, the general rule for combustible materials would be that it has to be three ‘x’ the distance away from the pipe where ‘x’ is the width of the pipe, so for example if the pipe is 5″ wide the mantle would have to be 15″ away from the pipe.

A Reclaimed Oak Beam is an excellent choice for a mantle.  Each one is unique and has a different profile, choose from beams full of rustic character twisted with knots or go for a more simple beam with a flat top.

Oak Mantle Beam

Oak Mantle

With hundreds of Reclaimed Oak Beams in stock and a showroom full of mantle beams ‘ready to go’ we have a good choice of beams that have been prepared for fitting.  Following cleaning & sanding a rich medium brown specialist wax is applied by brush in order to fill every nook and cranny within the oak beam and to eliminate dry patches.  Once the wax has been applied the oak is burnished by hand to reveal the most exquisite period patina.  Hand finished Reclaimed Oak Beams start at £25 (ex. VAT) per foot for a 6″ x 4″ section.

Reclaimed Oak Beam

Use Beam off cuts for Lamp Bases, stands or side tables  – as one customer did in the photograph below.

Who should fit my stove?
When it comes to fitting your stove we always recommend using a HETAS registered installer. You can find a list of approved fitters in your area on their website.
HETAS have also released the following safety checklist:

  • Always use the right fuel for the appliance as recommended by the manufacturer
  • Keep all combustibles, including logs, at a safe distance from the hot stove
  • Make sure any external air ventilation grills are not locked
  • Do not slow/ slumber burn
  • Never leave an open fire unattended without a spark guard
  • Get your stove service annually by a HETAS registered installer

Cathedral grade flags
Cathedral Grade Flags for sale at Ribble Reclamation

“I am the architect/ client for our new house & have been told I can be the most stubborn, fussy & demanding person to deal with.  The house is located in a conservation area & constructed using traditional materials, but with a modern twist, walls are reclaimed Cheshire brick and the roof reclaimed Welsh slate.  When designing, I always demand high quality & natural integrity in any of the materials I use.  Therefore when it came to the entrance hall, interior grade York stone was our natural choice of flooring material.

Even though we required a relatively small area of Yorkstone, we found it extremely difficult to source the right amount of consistent quality flags.  Fortunately we were introduced to Ribble Reclamation, who from the outset were very helpful & spoke with a passion about their approach to York stone flagging.  Ribble Reclamation’s Yorkstone Flags are carefully worked by a time served stone mason to ensure they are of a consistent quality of Cathedral grade. The flags are cut & dressed to the dimensions on your plans which means they can supply the quantity of flags you require without any wastage.  Once laid out to pattern, Lancashire rainwater is the secret ingredient used to clean the stone & let the stone mason check he’s achieved an ordered randomness for the different colours & patina in the laying pattern.  On site, once the stone has been bedded & jointed, water based sealer is added to the surface to enhance & protect the rich natural patina & unique colour of the individual stones.

As an architect the Ribble Reclamation York stone flags ticked all the boxes aesthetically & with my client hat on it made commercial sense too.  Firstly, there is a great benefit in seeing the floor laid out in its entirety before it is brought to site.  Secondly, with the flags cut to your actual plan there is no wastage, so you’re not paying for something you will not use.  Finally, with the stone being cut to plan, it is quicker & more cost effective to lay.  Our installers, as they stood admiring their work with pride, commented that it was the best quality stone they had ever laid.  We made the right decision to get our York stone floor from Ribble Reclamation, it is stunning product & without fail gets the most admiring comments.  A York stone floor of this quality can make a project & I would have no hesitation in recommending Ribble Reclamation’s York stone floor to anyone.”
